Obituary 1950-2008

On Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at approximately 8:00 pm the great old tree pass away. The great old tree lived a mysterious life but yet a very structured and static life at the same time. There are no records of family for the great old tree but after interviewing some of the tree's neighbors it seems that the tree had many friends that stood by its side in its last moments. The tree passed away at home, but not quietly. The tree met his demise when a lightning bolt met the tree during a storm. It is always a tough way to go for the trees but a least it fast and painless.

The great old tree is estimated to have been born circa 1950-1955. The post World War II era was a tough time for trees in general, hence the poor record keeping of the tree date of birth or lineage. Luckily for the great old tree he was of the Sweet Gum clan which was not as preferred in the mills as the unfortunate Pine clan which are heavily preferred in the wood mills and grown in huge concentration camps even to this day.

In honor of the great old tree we remember the saying, "If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around to hear it, does it make a noise?" Well, I'd say that this tree went out with a flash of light and a bang. And I do not believe that this tree did not die alone as it was surrounded by loved ones in which it protected with it strong and tall frame. Unfortunately for these loved ones, they are now the tallest trees around so I'm sure they are a bit concerned.

Arrangements will be held at the Hartzog Land today only between hours of sun up and sun down. It will be an open casket viewing. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in honor of the great tree to the "Jeremy will need a New Chainsaw after I Cut this Beast off my 4-Wheeler Trail" Fund located at the Bank of America in Loganville.-J
